Airtel has launched an AI-powered Spam Alert Service in Nigeria that helps customers detect spam messages in real-time. It automatically filters suspicious SMS and warns users about potential scams, all at no extra cost, with no need for app downloads or activation.

Spam Messages Are a Big Problem in Africa

A 2019 Quartz report revealed that nine of the world’s top 20 countries with the highest spam rates are in Africa. With smartphone usage increasing, scammers are targeting more people through fake SMS messages.

Here’s how they do it:

  • You receive an SMS pretending to be from Airtel, a bank, or a government agency.
  • It promises free airtime, loans, or giveaways.
  • It asks you to click a link or enter personal details.
  • Scammers steal your data and commit fraud.

Airtel’s new AI solution is designed to stop this before it happens.

How Airtel’s AI Spam Alert Works

The AI-powered system scans every SMS in real-time, analyzing over 250 factors without reading the message content. Some of the key things it checks include:

  • How often the sender sends messages
  • Where the messages are coming from
  • If the number has been flagged before

If an SMS looks suspicious, the system marks it as “Suspected SPAM.”

Added Security Protects You from Malicious Links

Airtel’s AI also blocks harmful links sent via SMS. It cross-checks messages against a database of blacklisted URLs and alerts users before they click on dangerous links.

The system processes over 1.5 billion messages in just 2 milliseconds, making it one of the fastest and most advanced anti-spam systems.

Airtel’s Vision for a Safer Network

Speaking at the launch event in Lagos, Airtel Nigeria Managing Director and CEO, Dinesh Balsingh, emphasized that customer safety is Airtel’s top priority.

“Enhancing customer experience is our foremost priority, and we are proud to launch Africa’s first AI-powered spam alert solution. This is a game-changer for the telecoms industry in Africa.”

He also confirmed that other African countries will get this feature soon.

Scams are becoming more common, and staying safe is harder than ever. To help, Airtel has introduced an AI-powered spam alert to protect Nigerians from fraud. With this built-in security, users will see fewer scam messages and enjoy a safer mobile experience at no extra cost.
