Nigeria is about to make history with its first artificial intelligence (AI) university, Wini University, set to open in Epe, Lagos. This institution aims to train young Nigerians in advanced AI skills while helping Africa take a leading role in the global tech industry.

Wini University is not just about education. It is part of a bigger dream to turn Lagos into Africa’s Silicon Valley, a place where technology and innovation solve real-world problems.

The Beginning of a Big Dream

The idea for Wini University started in 2016 when a group of visionaries from Boston and Nigeria came together with the same goal: to create a place where young Africans can learn and lead in AI.

The name Wini Institution was inspired by Qatar’s first AI university, which brought together top experts from around the world. After years of planning and securing approval from Nigeria’s National University Commission (NUC), Wini University is finally becoming a reality.

Building a Tech Hub in Lagos

Wini University’s main goal is to teach students skills in advanced areas like:

Blockchain

Quantum Computing

Machine Learning

Data Science

Generative AI

These fields are at the heart of today’s global tech revolution, and students from Wini University will be prepared to work on big ideas that could change industries and transform economies.

The decision to locate the university in Epe fits into Lagos State’s larger vision of becoming the “California of Africa.” Local leaders are fully behind this project, even donating ancestral land for the university’s permanent campus.

Creating Jobs and a Digital Economy

Wini University will help shift Epe’s economy from agriculture to a digital economy. This change could bring:

  • Quality jobs.
  • Global partnerships.
  • Innovations like drones, robots, and AI solutions for climate change.

A Step Into the Future

The global AI market is expected to reach $4.6 trillion by 2040, and Wini University wants to ensure that Africa is part of this growth. The university’s mission is to create a generation of Africans who are inventors and leaders in the AI space, not just observers.

Wini University is more than just a school. It is a bold move to drive innovation, attract investments, and put Africa on the global tech map.
