Kano State, under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, is set to host its first-ever Kano Startup Weekend (KSW) on December 13-14, 2025 at Coronation Hall, Government House Kano. Organised by the Kano State Information Technology Development Agency (KASITDA), this landmark event marks a major milestone in the state’s technology and innovation journey.

Why This Matters

As part of the Digital Transformation Agenda (2025-2030), Kano is aiming to transform into Northern Nigeria’s leading innovation hub. KASITDA’s initiative reflects a broader vision: build a knowledge-driven economy, strengthen the startup ecosystem, and unlock opportunities for tech entrepreneurs across Health, Education, Agriculture, and Transportation sectors.

Dr. Bashir Abdu Muzakkari, Director-General of KASITDA, stressed the significance of this edition, saying that Kano’s first Startup Weekend is not merely an event, but a launchpad for the next generation of Kanawa entrepreneurs. The goal is to tackle persistent challenges: funding gaps, mentorship shortages, and limited access to modern tools.

What to Expect

The two-day weekend promises a lineup of exciting, growth-oriented activities:

  • Pitch Competition: 20 pre-selected startups will pitch their ideas in front of investors and a panel of experts, competing for seed funding, prizes, and strategic partnerships.
  • Expert Panels & Knowledge Sessions: Sessions will cover scaling businesses, accessing finance, emerging tech trends, and navigating regulatory landscapes.
  • Innovation Exhibition: Space for startups, governmental agencies, and sponsors to showcase products, services, and solutions.
  • Networking Forums: Structured networking opportunities—entrepreneurs, mentors, investors, and policy makers will meet, share ideas, and form collaborations.

It is estimated that the event will attract over 1,000 participants, including founders, innovators, policymakers, investors, and leaders across the tech and business sectors.

Key Themes & Sectors

Under the theme “Igniting Innovation, Empowering Entrepreneurs”, KSW 2025 will concentrate on sectors that promise high impact, especially in Kano:

  • Health
  • Education
  • Agriculture
  • Transportation

These sectors form part of KASITDA’s HEAT priority sectors, emphasising areas where tech innovation can drive both social and economic development.

Call to Action

KASITDA is calling on all stakeholders to take part:

  • Startups & Founders who want to pitch ideas, build their brand, or find funding.
  • Investors & Mentors to share expertise, connect with promising talent, and help shape Kano’s ecosystem.
  • Corporate Partners & Sponsors to support the infrastructure, prizes, and visibility of this event.
  • Technology Enthusiasts, Students, Policymakers—everyone willing to learn, contribute, and be part of the momentum.

For more information, including registration and sponsorship details, KASITDA has directed interested parties to their website and official contacts.

The Bigger Picture

The Kano Startup Weekend 2025 is a strategic push toward:

  • Deepening Kano’s capacity for innovation
  • Bridging the gap between ideas and investment
  • Cultivating entrepreneurship as a means of economic growth and inclusion
  • Positioning Kano State as a leading tech hub in Northern Nigeria and beyond

As Dr. Bashir Abdu Muzakkari aptly put it, this is part of a long-term vision to build a knowledge-based economy, one that not only harnesses technology and talent but ensures that local entrepreneurs have both the opportunity and resources to scale.

Kano Startup Weekend 2025 is a promising initiative that could well rewrite parts of the innovation narrative in Northern Nigeria. For all those interested in transforming ideas into impact, this is one to watch and participate in.
