Google has officially brought its cutting-edge AI Mode to African users(starting with Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa), introducing a major leap forward in how complex questions are answered and insights are explored.
What Is AI Mode?
AI Mode is a powerful new search feature powered by Google’s latest Gemini 2.5 model. It enables users to pose complex, multi-part queries and receive holistic, advanced AI-generated responses rather than juggling several search attempts.
This mode excels with exploratory or detailed prompts(such as planning a foodie weekend in Cape Town or understanding bird migration patterns) by breaking such queries into subtopics and processing them simultaneously.
Multimodal Capabilities
AI Mode supports multimodal input, meaning users can query using text, voice, or images. You can simply speak your query by tapping the microphone icon or even upload a photo to let AI explore your topic visually.
Launch and Availability
As of August 21, 2025, AI Mode began rolling out in Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa, appearing as a distinct tab on search results pages and within the Google app for Android and iOS users.
Local Perspective

Alex Okosi, Managing Director of Google Africa, expressed his excitement about the innovation, saying:
“We’re incredibly excited to bring AI Mode to our users in the region. We know that people in this region are curious and have complex questions … With AI Mode, we are reimagining the Search experience.”
How It Enhances Search
- Deep, nuanced answers: AI Mode can deliver rich insights for layered queries faster and more intuitively than traditional search.
- Content discovery: Responses include prominent links to help users explore broader resources across the web.
- Fallback when necessary: If confidence in an AI-generated answer is low, Google ensures users still get standard search results.
- Powering broader adoption of AI: This expansion complements Google’s broader investments in Africa. Google has currently invested $37 million in AI research, training, infrastructure, language tools, and AI hubs.
Why It Matters for Africa
This rollout signifies an important shift: Google is empowering African users with context-aware, conversational, and multimodal search. It’s offering better answers, elevating access, inclusivity, and user experience through AI.
By integrating these capabilities alongside investments in local talent, research, and infrastructure, Google is steadily building toward a future where Africans are both creators and shapers of AI-powered tools.
